A Post-Modern Movement I Never Heard Of
A Post-Modern Movement I Never Heard Of
(August 25th, 2007; Robert Marino with Ken Silva [Apprising Ministries])
(Updated on March 19th, 2011 by Robert Marino)

My Pastor just recently gave me a book by Rob Bell of Mars Hills Church in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He wanted me to read the book and get back to him as I was interested in getting involved in this church to do ministry as I am an evangelist and Bible Teacher. The name of the book is "Velvet Elvis, Repainting the Christian Faith." When the book touched my hand, the Holy Spirit in the still small voice SCREAMED OUT to me the word DECEPTION. You talk about hearing the voice of God. I've only had God speak to me that loud a few times in my life. This was before I ever read the book and I had never heard of Rob Bell up to this point. It bothered me that the unction of the Holy Spirit was so strong. Was my pastor deceived and unknowningly passing this deception onto me and his congregation? I would hope not. But after I had read through the book and taken down about thirty pages of notes on some very disturbing theology and comments by the writer, Rob Bell, I had to question my pastor's motives and why he was involving himself with this kind of thinking.
Anyhow, it was one of the hardest books that I have ever read due to the grieving of the Holy Spirit that something wasn't quite right. I went ahead and read it to be fair to my pastor who wanted to get together after I was done reading it to discuss some things. Unfortunately, he was not willing to listen to any correction probably due to pride. Not only that, he tried passing on other Emergent leader's books on to me in spite of my clear rejection of its teachings.

We are to be armed and ready and not be ignorant of Satan's devices. I am deeply concerned about this movement because God has put me in similar situations and the pastor's either don't want to see their error or repent of it. We have made the gospel an unholy thing by cheapening the grace therein. There was a reason why God had the Jews to be separate and that some things that were common were not to be a part of their heritage. Even the precious perfume for the sanctuary use could not be duplicated without one being executed. If it was duplicated, it would now become a common thing and not special. God hates sin. And many, in their teachings are separating God's holiness from His love. That is like God saving someone but never sanctifying them.

I once had a bible school teacher say, to get a fuller understanding, that although the New Testament was written in Koine Greek, the people of that time thought in Hebrew BUT he never said to take a HEBREW word the way Bell does and expound on it rather than expounding upon scripture in exegetical form (a whole verse, then the entire passage that verse is in, then how it related to the book it was written in, and finally reading it in context with the other 65 books in the Bible). Knowing Greek and Hebrew is useless if it is not also used within the context that it is written in. I can't figure out why Bell does this. Maybe it is just to impress people or sound smarticulate. I am praying for the guy and those in this movement.

2Pe 1:20  Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation.

There are many today even outside the Emergent Church Movement that think they have some kind of new revelation but all they are doing is adding or taking away from the Word of God. We will be held accoiutable for doing so.

Ken Silva:
Hello Robert,
Good to hear from you. In answer to your question: Yes, in fact they feel as if this is a deep revelation of true Christian experience. For those of us versed in the Bible, Bell is actually quite pedestrian and he brings out trite things but apparently feels his audience doesn't know the Bible (he's right there) so he is teaching "simply".

Frankly his constant referring to Hebrew when the NT was written in Greek is a major source of his problems. Listen to Bell and one will starve for the Word of God.

In my opinion Bell may be sincere but he is deluded into thinking he has "discovered" something. The Truth is all of us versed in hermeneutics know that while the New Testament was in Greek obviously Jews had a Hebraic concept. The problem for Bell is that even the Septuagint was as common as the KJV is today. So while Bell can tell us what some unregenerate rabbi means with a Hebrew word it hasn't much to do with spiritually understanding the texts.

Blessings in Christ,
Pastor Ken (Apprising Ministries)

Pastor Ken is one of the first ministers and ministries to study out, research, and explain the history of the Emergent Church Movement along with its belief system. His many articles can be read at http://apprising.org/.

Another good resource is Lighthouse Trails Research Project. They have over 2,800 articles on the Emergent Church Movement. If you are not sure what Emergent leaders believe or teach and how it is compared to the scriptures, this web site is a must. I would say it is beneficial to the one that doesn't want to go into error or the one that wants the truth on this subject.

Ezekiel 3:16-22 is a good section for every minister to read for those who are afraid to warn people of their error.

Eze 3:16  And it came to pass at the end of seven days, that the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,
Eze 3:17  Son of man, I have made thee a watchman unto the house of Israel: therefore hear the word at my mouth, and give them warning from me.
Eze 3:18  When I say unto the wicked, Thou shalt surely die; and thou givest him not warning, nor speakest to warn the wicked from his wicked way, to save his life; the same wicked man shall die in his iniquity; but his blood will I require at thine hand.
Eze 3:19  Yet if thou warn the wicked, and he turn not from his wickedness, nor from his wicked way, he shall die in his iniquity; but thou hast delivered thy soul.
Eze 3:20  Again, When a righteous man doth turn from his righteousness, and commit iniquity, and I lay a stumblingblock before him, he shall die: because thou hast not given him warning, he shall die in his sin, and his righteousness which he hath done shall not be remembered; but his blood will I require at thine hand.
Eze 3:21  Nevertheless if thou warn the righteous man, that the righteous sin not, and he doth not sin, he shall surely live, because he is warned; also thou hast delivered thy soul.
Eze 3:22  And the hand of the LORD was there upon me; and he said unto me, Arise, go forth into the plain, and I will there talk with thee.
